This is the second volume of a story that takes place in a world where WWI did not end. Most of the story in first book occurred in and around Port Arthur, and it was a readable and thoughtful story: in my review I gave it four stars. In Black Bear Blues, the plot not just thickens, but spread into Siberia, Mongolia, Sinkiang, with a token but not negligible appearance by Afghan and Iranian troops. The protagonist is still the same engaging flat slob we met the first volume, but his politics are more intrusive and further to the left. Some readers may view this as progress, but it does not add to the book.One real problem with this book is that many of the actions and events of the war in this volume are simply impossible in view of the distances and railway capacities in the area. A lot of things are possible in alternate history, but not what takes place in this book. In addition, the military and naval side of the story is just not credible, and is increasingly affected by events back in the USA. This is presumably a lead in to the third volume, but General Patton is already the chief villain, etc.
I do not intend to continue this series, but the three star rating is merited by the author's skill and ability to write a book that reads well, and he certainly picked a good time and place for his alternate world. I hope the author, or another writer with a better knowledge of politics and military realities, will base his/her story on what he might have emerged the chaos of 1919 - 1929 in Siberia, Manchuria, and North China. There are enormous possibilities here, as history at that time and place could easily turned out otherwise than it did.

Great 2nd book in the series!

enjoyable read
You MUST read the Polar Bear Blues first or you won't really get it. This is a great story. Good writing, almost like the guy is thinking aloud or writing a diary.
Like a literate pulp novel series, if that makes sense. The Endless War has an excellent mix of real and alternative history, action, and characters to care about. I am definitely waiting for the next book.
I really enjoyed the first book, and recommend reading it first or you will have trouble following the cast. It's written in a first person memoir style, like a war correspondent. If you are looking for the big picture and we'll explained point if departure from OTL you'll have trouble finding it but if you want a grunts eye view of a land war in Asia, this is it.
I will admit it could use another pass of the editors pen but that is common for the lower priced novels. Not a significant distraction from the narrative. The idea for this alternate world is very original and it's fun to identify people who have been exiled by "The Hoovers".
Not finished the book yet but since I am going on long business trip and will finish it away and start another I wanted to put my 2 cents in. I'm impressed. As mentioned in other reviews it's written in a first person, "memoir" style that is a bit quirky at first but becomes more familiar and intriguing as you read. It has a period and a "real" feel to it. The alternative history, while it goes far afield, is well conceived and researched. Like any good story should, it has good characters and action. I think fans of decent and unique fiction, alternative history buffs, and war fiction fans would all enjoy it. I think it succeeds on a lot of levels. I'm not a paid reviewer or friend or family and not usually this profuse with praise but it's fun finding a diamond in the rough and I've read a lot of "rough" in the kindle indy world lately.
