This book is the preeminent guide to Utah’s amazing backcountry trails. It contains comprehensive descriptions of 97 trails throughout the state and is profusely illustrated with nearly 500 colorful photographs and trail maps. (The print version of the book is 496 pages long!). Most of the trails are day hikes of three to ten miles in length, but the book also contains lengthy descriptions of two dozen backpacking trails that extend for up to thirty-five miles. The trails will take you up Utah’s mountain peaks, through her redrock canyons, past Anasazi cliff dwellings and natural arches, as well as to waterfalls, hot springs and backcountry swimming holes. Mr. Day has rated each trail with one to five stars according to how interesting and enjoyable he finds the hike. And, yes, he has personally been on all of them.

I got this book after coming across the author's website while researching Buckskin Gulch. I liked the map he showed on his website and decided to get the book. I am often times skeptical of hiking and camping books as so many either read like stereo instructions with too much overly technical info that buries all the little hike info I actually want, or they assume that everyone is a novice and gear the book towards that crowd. I was really surprised with how well this book is put together. Very good maps, helpful how to get to the trail info, and a host "at 0.8 miles in look left for this scenic point" type of information. The photos are good in the book, though not spectacular so do not do some of the sites justice. Great idea and jumping off book for exploring some lesser known trails.

Utah Incredible Backcountry Trails 2nd edition eBook David Day Reviews

This book was incredibly helpful and useful. Before traveling through southern Utah, I purchased this literature and it took me to all the best places. A must have before exploring Utah.
I made a photo copy of a couple of the pages out of this book to take on a weeklong hike into the high Uintas. It was very helpful to have these photo copies. It would have been too heavy to carry the whole book with me.
A surprisingly thick book, but worth the money; even though many of the hikes are described & charted online, this is a great reference. It is interesting to discover how few hikes are rated 5 star (compared to e.g. From here to wow, or online sites such as Todd's hikes, or American southwest dot net etc. Even the Bryce hikes don't get 5 stars! The individual hikes can be cut out the book so you don't have to lug this tome with you. One surprising description, on p. 403, is that of the Coyote Gulch exit near Hamblin Arch "The climb is not difficult, but it does require a small amount of rock climbing ability. ...if you can get up the first 30 feet you should have no difficulty with the rest." All other sources of info (first-hand accounts) on this climb-out either DO NOT recommend this route (see Allen, Canyoneering 3, page 190 "This exit route, used by many, is extremely dangerous. All due caution must exercised. Belays MUST be used."), or make it clear that it is very risky. Otherwise this guide is terrific.
This book is awesome! It is so nice to have all of this information in one place. There are tons of useful details here, it really is amazing. Whether you know a lot about Utah's hiking trails or almost nothing you will find something for you in this book.
Lost my first edition, so purchased this second one. I have hiked about 75 percent of the hikes in this book and the descriptions are good and easy to follow. I like the color photos, and often choose the next hike based on the photos.
Although this book does have some day hikes in it, it is primarily a book for backpacking. And it is OUTSTANDING. Everything is exception about this book - the descriptions, maps, photos, etc. It is a bit heavy, so you will want to copy pages instead of hauling this thing into the backcountry.

The author rates all the hikes from 1-5, and I agree with his assessment for almost every chapter.
I used this book to hike the Boulder Mail Trail. The book instructed that I walk one mile past the trailhead on a dirt road. B.c I used a GPS, I found myself getting further and further away from my objective. I had to turn around, climb one mile up the trail, only to use the trailhead next to my car.
